N: In recent decades, in both patients and doctors, the demand for safety and aesthetically pleasing prosthetic solutions has grown in restorative and prosthetic dentistry. For this purpose, several new ceramic materials have recently been introduced onto the market which, however, must be processed using computerized CAD / CAM technologies. Initially, it was important that the materials were mechanically resistant and easy to work with and the feldspar ceramics were suitable for small occlusal inlays (CEREC I). The importance of expanding the indications of CAD / CAM restorations (to onlays and crowns) has led the practitioner to use more mechanically resistant materials: this is how reinforced ceramic were developed. The next step was to increase the mechanical properties of these resins by adding ceramic particles. Nowadays, manufacturers want to combine these two families of materials, using their advantages. OBJECTIVES: carry out a literature review to discover the characteristics, the indication and the advantages and disadvantages of the different techniques and materials used in restorations with CAD-CAM technology and in particular, identify those with the best results when used in posterior tooth restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: through a digital search of the works provided by the CRAI library of Universidad Europea de Madrid, as well as in PubMed, Medline and Google Scholar. CONCLUSIONS: nowadays, there are no studies that define which technique is better than the other, except in some specific situations; as far as materials are concerned, the choice will be lithium disilicate and resin-ceramic composite for aesthetics and zirconia for mechanical Strength.es
