%X Dens in dente or dens invaginatus is a dental malformation of teeth due to an infolding of enamel into dentin, which results in an invagination into the pulp chamber. It can be classified differently according to the extension and author. This paper aims to discuss and present the different controversial aetiologies, the prevalence and differential diagnosis of dens in dente or so-called dens invaginatus. Furthermore, it serves to raise awareness among dental professionals about dens in dente and to highlight the importance of a correct diagnosis and differential diagnosis of the dental anomaly. To pursue information about dens in dente and its aetiology, prevalence and differential diagnosis, the following scientific search engines were used: Medline, ResearchGate, Sciencedirect and PubMed. The focus was on articles from the last 15 years. The following keywords were applied for the search: "Dens in Dente", "Dens Invaginatus" connected with keywords such as “Aetiology”, “Diagnosis”, “Differential Diagnosis”, “Prevalence” and “Treatment”.Dens in dente is an important malformation and the aetiology is still controversial among different authors and not well understood until nowadays. Dens in dente can affect up to 10% of the population and often occurs bilateral.It is important to diagnose dens in dente correctly and to differentiate between other dental anomalies such as dens evaginatus, gemination or palatogingival groove, to ensure to offer the best treatment options to the patient.It was observed that dens in dente is an important anomaly in dentistry, therefore dentist should be aware of it. The malformation is still the subject of research, especially in the field of aetiology due to the controversial opinions and the lack of information. In addition, if the differential diagnosis is correct, future complications that can arise from dens in dente can be prevented and dentists can provide the best treatment options to their patients.
%X Dens in dente o dens invaginatus es una malformación dental de los dientes debido a un pliegue del esmalte en la dentina, que da como resultado una invaginación en la cámara pulpar. Se puede clasificar de forma diferente según la extensión y el autor. Objetivos Este artículo tiene como objetivo discutir y presentar las diferentes etiologías controvertidas, la prevalencia y el diagnóstico diferencial de dens in dente o los denominados dens invaginatus. Además, sirve para concienciar a los profesionales de la odontología sobre los dens in dente y resaltar la importancia de un correcto diagnóstico y diagnóstico diferencial de la anomalía dental. Para buscar información sobre dens in dente y su etiología, prevalencia y diagnóstico diferencial, se utilizaron los siguientes buscadores científicos: Medline, ResearchGate, Sciencedirect y PubMed. La atención se centró en artículos de los últimos 15 años. Se aplicaron las siguientes palabras clave para la búsqueda: "Dens in Dente", "Dens Invaginatus" relacionadas con palabras clave como "Etiología", "Diagnóstico", "Diagnóstico diferencial", "Prevalencia" y "Tratamiento". Dens in dente es una malformación importante y la etiología sigue siendo controvertida entre diferentes autores y no se comprende bien hasta la actualidad. Los dens in dente pueden afectar hasta el 10% de la población y suelen presentarse de forma bilateral. Es importante diagnosticar correctamente un dens in dente y diferenciar otras anomalías dentales como dens evaginatus, geminación o surco palatogingival, para asegurar ofrecer las mejores opciones de tratamiento al paciente. Se observó que el dens in dente es una anomalía importante en odontología y el dentista debe ser consciente de ello. Aún se encuentra en investigación, especialmente en el campo de la etiología debido a las opiniones controvertidas y la falta de información. Además, gracias a un correcto diagnóstico y diagnóstico diferencial, se pueden prevenir futuras complicaciones que puedan surgir de dens in dente y los odontólogos pueden brindar las mejores opciones de tratamiento para sus pacientes.
